Ballston Spa warns residents of fake police scam

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Ballston Spa residents are being warned of an ongoing scam in which scammers send a letter asking for donations to an organization that has no connection to the Ballston Spa Police Department, even though the letter mentions “Ballston Spa Police Officers.” Authorities say the money provided will not reach the village or the police department.

Mayor Frank Rossi told NEWS10 that an elderly gentleman stopped by the Ballston Spa Police Department to bring money, believing the letter was part of a legitimate campaign. Rossi says police were confused by the act and wondered why he brought them money.

Citizens are advised that if they have any doubts about such letters or campaigns, they should assume that they are a scam and check with their local authorities to ensure they are aware of them.
