Aircraft alert issued for Pōhakuloa Training Area, RIMPAC

(BIVN) – More jet engines and aircraft will be seen in the skies over the island of Hawaii this month as the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024 exercise takes place throughout July.

Residents around Hilo Airport have already noticed an increase in military aircraft taking off and landing.

This week, the Pōhakuloa Training Area Public Affairs Office issued a training advisory saying enhanced training will take place from July 8 to Aug. 2. The irregular, daily flights will take place from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., U.S. Army Hawaii said.

From the PTA training advice:

The fixed-wing aircraft flights will vary between fighter jets, heavy transport aircraft and jets. RIMPAC is a biennial international maritime exercise that maintains the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes. This year’s exercise includes humanitarian assistance and disaster relief training, which are critical to ensuring military units and soldiers are ready to complete their mission and return home safely.

“To report concerns about noise or training, contact the NEW U.S. Army Hawaii Community Concern Line at (808) 787-1529 or [email protected],” the PTA Public Affairs release states. “Concerns will be addressed during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.”
