One dead, another rescued in accident at construction site in Mangaluru

Mangalore (Karnataka):

Tragedy struck at a construction site in the Balmatta area on Wednesday: One worker died and another was seriously injured when they became trapped in a pit after loose soil fell on them, officials said.

The incident occurred around 12.30 pm when two labourers, Chandan (30) and Raj Kumar (18), both from Bihar, were involved in foundation work for a building, they said.

The workers were part of a team erecting a high-rise structure in the upper part of the city. The disaster occurred when a section of loose soil gave way, trapping the men under a 20-foot-deep pit at the construction site, officials said.

According to the authorities, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire brigade were immediately mobilised. Raj Kumar was rescued alive and taken to a local hospital where he is currently being treated. Unfortunately, Chandan was found dead after several hours of rescue operations.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan and Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal arrived at the spot to oversee the rescue efforts.

Senior civil engineers of Mangaluru city said the entire coastal region, except some inner strips, consists of loose and porous laterite soil and deep excavations pose a risk of ground collapse. At the same time, doubts were raised about the safety measures at the construction sites.
