Police find dead man after curfew in Cranberry despite ‘worrying’ note and weapons

A man who police said was not of sound mind and was carrying a truckload of weapons in a vehicle near a golf course in Cranberry Township sparked a major police response and a curfew in the community on Tuesday.

Officials said the man was later found dead in the woods, but the circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Township Police Chief Kevin Meyer said at a news conference that Cranberry Highlands Golf Course employees noticed a stalled vehicle on a private road on the golf course’s property just before 10 a.m. Meyer said the vehicle’s occupant, a man whose identity is not known, told them he was having trouble with his car and could not speak clearly.

There were weapons in the vehicle, police said. When officers arrived, the vehicle, a rental car, was empty and the man was missing.

“In addition, they found some notes in the vehicle that caused officers great concern. They indicated that the person was mentally unstable and may have wanted to harm himself or others,” Meyer said.

The notes referred to UPMC in some way, Meyer said.

Police cordoned off the golf course and evacuated it, he said. Numerous officers searched the area, and a community-wide curfew was imposed. At 3:10 p.m., the man was found on Freshcorn Road, Meyer said.

“Our investigators are still looking into the matter,” Meyer said. “The Pennsylvania State Police will be assisting us in the investigation, so those details are not yet known. More information will follow.”
