Driver dies in crash with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy

Authorities are investigating after a driver was killed in a crash involving a sheriff’s deputy in San Bernardino County on Saturday.

At around 4:00 p.m., an Apple Valley Police officer responded to a 911 call and activated the hazard lights and siren.


The officer was driving westbound on Bear Valley Road. As the driver of a Toyota Corolla turned left into a parking lot, he collided with the officer, officials said.

The Toyota driver died instantly as a result of the impact and the deputy sheriff suffered minor injuries.

A video from the scene of the accident showed that both vehicles had severe front-end damage. Pedestrians could be seen surrounding the accident site, which was bordered by shopping centers on both sides.

The Toyota driver was only identified as male. His name was not released. The injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Bear Valley Road was closed to traffic between Kiowa Road and Snapping Turtle for several hours while authorities worked to clear the debris.

The fatal accident remains under investigation.
