Yemen’s Houthis fire ballistic missiles at US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea

Sanaa:

The armed Houthi group in Yemen said in a statement that it had fired ballistic missiles at the US aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the northern Red Sea.

“The missile force of our armed forces carried out an operation against the American aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the northern Red Sea with several ballistic missiles and cruise missiles and the operation successfully achieved its objectives,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a statement on Saturday on the Houthi-run al-Masirah television channel.

However, there is currently no evidence that the aircraft carrier was actually attacked, the Xinhua news agency reported.

This is the second known attack by the Houthis on the US aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the Red Sea in less than a month. The first attack on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier took place on May 31; the US military did not comment.

Sarea said the militant group also attacked the merchant ship TRANSWORLD NAVIGATOR in the Arabian Sea with ballistic missiles in response to what the Houthis said was a violation by the ship’s owner of their ban on entry to Israeli ports.

The statement threatened further attacks of this kind “until the (Israeli) aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted.”

According to the television station Houthi al-Masirah, fighter jets from the American-British coalition had carried out four air strikes on Houthi targets northwest of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah on the Red Sea on Saturday.

Hours before the coalition airstrikes, Britain’s Maritime Trade Operations reported explosions near a merchant ship 126 nautical miles east of the southern Yemeni port city of Aden. There were no reports of casualties or damage.

The Houthi group, which controls large parts of northern Yemen, began firing anti-ship ballistic missiles and drones at allegedly Israeli-linked ships crossing the Red Sea in November last year to show solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In response, the US-UK naval coalition based in the country’s waters has been conducting airstrikes and missile attacks on Houthi targets since January in an attempt to deter the group, but this has only led to an escalation of Houthi attacks on US and British merchant and warships.
