Two teens arrested after shooting near Aurora basketball court

AURORA, Colorado – Two teenagers were arrested after a shooting near a basketball court in Aurora that left a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old injured.

According to Aurora police, officers responded to a shooting in the 12400 block of East Ford Avenue around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found two victims – a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old boy – suffering from gunshot wounds.

The boys were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Aurora police, at least four juveniles were arrested following the shooting. In an update Thursday, the department said a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old boy were arrested.

The 14-year-old was arrested on three warrants for second-degree assault, third-degree assault, and criminal damage to property. The 15-year-old was arrested for possession of a dangerous/illegal weapon, possession of a weapon by a minor, and obstructing a peace officer.

According to Aurora police, the 15-year-old possessed an illegally modified handgun equipped with an automatic switch that turns a semi-automatic pistol into a fully automatic pistol. It is unknown if the seized weapon was used in the shooting.

Investigators are working to determine the exact involvement of the teens in the shooting.

All people involved in the shooting have been identified and there are no other suspects, according to Aurora police. Police said they are working with prosecutors to determine the “appropriate charges” for the others who have not yet been arrested.
