Government suspends NYCN election with immediate effect – CrossRiverWatch

By Mary Bassey

The Cross River State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the planned elections to the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).

The Security Adviser in the State, Major General O. U Obono (retired), in a letter to the State Secretariat, NYCN Youth House, Calabar, gave the directive to suspend the elections scheduled for June 19, 2024, to avoid any breach of security in the State.

In the run-up to the elections, the NYCN State Council is mired in crisis; a situation in which political analysts and astrologers are predicting violence, as the previous elections were allegedly marred.

Major Obono called on all sister security agencies in the state to crack down on individuals or groups of people violating the directive.

“I am writing to inform you that the Youth Council elections scheduled for June 19, 2024, if held, would constitute a breach of security in the state. For this reason, this office strongly advises you to postpone the event to allow for an amicable resolution of the issues in dispute before proceeding.

“I request you to heed this advice to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state, as anything to the contrary will not be tolerated. Treat it as important and always accept my warm greetings.”
