One dead and one child injured in Prince George’s Potomac High school shooting

A man was killed and a five-year-old injured during a youth football game at Potomac High School on Saturday morning.

Prince George’s police chief Malik Aziz said at a press conference on Saturday afternoon that a football game for seven-year-olds was taking place at the high school when a verbal argument broke out between two people in the stands. The argument escalated into a shooting. The perpetrator shot a man and a five-year-old at around 11:20 a.m. According to police, the suspect fled after the shooting.

Both were taken to hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. The 5-year-old is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Aziz said the two people involved in the altercation knew each other and the argument was about something that happened outside of the game. “And (they) brought it up at a game where young people, 7-year-olds, were playing soccer and enjoying this beautiful day with their families,” Aziz said.

He said homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.

“The work we have to do right now is not just reactive,” Democratic County Supervisor Angela D. Alsobrooks said at the press conference. “We really have to move forward as a community, and we have to do this in partnership with neighboring jurisdictions to make sure we are doing everything in our power to remove guns from our communities.”
