Next phase of Buffalo Airport runway project begins

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority said the airport’s main runway will receive improvements including centerline, lighting and taxiway improvements. The NFTA said the work “is part of ongoing preventative maintenance”.

Taxiway A is currently under construction. This work will not impact any travel.

Phase 1 of the runway project was completed on September 1 last year with improvements to Runway 5-23, which will undergo additional work beginning July 1.

“Nighttime work will begin on Runway 5-23 and flights are expected to arrive and depart around this work,” the NFTA said in a statement Friday.

Runway 5-23 will be closed from August 1 to October 1, at which point the abrupt closure will become a strictly nighttime closure.

“During this construction phase, area residents will notice aircraft using alternate flight paths more frequently and sound patterns will temporarily change as flights take off and land on Runway 1432,” the NFTA said.
