Brewers 360: Where is the power in the MLB? Are baseballs dead?

MILWAUKEE – Are baseballs dead this year?

In 2024, Major League Baseball’s performance seemed to be declining. At the beginning of the season, home runs, OPS and slugging percentage were all declining.

What gives?

“I don’t know about all the research on the bats and balls,” said Matt Arnold, senior VP and general manager of the Brewers. “I know (souped-up balls) have been talked about in the past. It might just depend on the bats and balls (the team) gets that day.”

Arnold seemed to downplay the concept of “dead balls” during an appearance on WTMJ’s Wis. Morning News on Thursday.

“Sure, everyone likes the home run, but (the Brewers) play a lot of small ball,” he said. “We move runners, we steal bases. We try to attack teams in a lot of different ways, not just with a home run.”
