Woman arrested for rental fraud in Henry County

PARIS, Tenn. (WSMV) – A woman was arrested for allegedly attempting to fraudulently rent a home for sale in Henry County, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said Melissa Bennett of Paris was arrested Sunday on charges of impersonation of a public official, theft of property under $1,000, identity fraud and trespassing.

According to the sheriff’s office, a home on Highway 69 N. 825 is currently listed for sale through Cannon Realty in Paris. Several accounts have indicated on Facebook that the home is available for rent.

When callers dial the contact number to inquire about the property, the person will ask several questions about your interest in the home. Then, the person will ask the caller to submit an application, which will be sent via email, and will require a refundable fee of $60.

The sheriff’s office said the people involved in the rental attempt were not associated with Cannon Realty.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have fallen victim to the scam involving the listed home to call investigators at 731-642-1672.
