NYPD officer allegedly shot driver in incident of driving aggression in New Jersey

A New York police officer has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say he shot another man in an apparent road rage incident in New Jersey, prosecutors said.

Hieu Tran, 27, was charged Thursday with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree illegal possession of a weapon, according to a statement from the Camden County District Attorney’s Office.

Tran’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The NYPD said Tran is currently suspended without pay.

On May 17, shortly after 11 p.m., officers from the Voorhees Township Police Department responded to a multi-car crash and found that one of the drivers involved had a gunshot wound, the prosecutor’s statement said.

The unidentified 30-year-old Voorhees Township man was taken to a local hospital where he remains under treatment, the statement said.

Prosecutors said investigators used surveillance video, cellphone records and ballistics evidence to identify Tran as the shooter in the “apparent incident of road rage.” That ballistics evidence from the crime scene was linked to Tran’s NYPD-issued firearm, prosecutors said.

Tran is being held in New York and is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

The public prosecutor’s office announced that investigations are currently ongoing.
