I-45 South closed at FM 518 in League City after driver was ejected from his SUV, according to police; unoccupied vehicle hits three occupants

LEAGUE CITY, Texas (KTRK) – A traffic incident Friday afternoon on I-45 in League City may have been caused by someone speeding and crashing their SUV into another car, police said.

League City police and firefighters continue to investigate a serious crash in the southbound lanes of I-45 at FM 518. It occurred around 3:20 p.m. Friday.

According to police, witnesses called 911 to report that someone was driving recklessly and driving into the city.

According to police, the driver of a white Ford Expedition struck an outer highway guardrail while approaching FM 518, crossed all lanes and struck the inner guardrail.

At the same time, the driver’s door was opened and the driver was thrown from his vehicle onto the shoulder, investigators said.

According to police, the unoccupied vehicle continued driving, backed into the lane and crashed into a Toyota Corolla in the middle lane.

The driver was the only occupant of the Ford, while there were three people in the Toyota. Emergency services took all four people to the hospital.

Investigators are reconstructing the accident to determine whether charges will be filed. Police stressed that the accident was not the result of a chase.

At around 6:30 p.m., crews began clearing the wreck, which improved conditions.

At one point, all southbound main lanes were closed and vehicles were diverted at the FM 518 exit. The traffic jams extended all the way to Bay Area Boulevard.
