1 dead, 1 seriously injured after attempted murder-suicide in Cape Coral

A man is dead and a woman is critically injured after a murder-suicide attempt in Cape Coral on Sunday. Cape Coral police responded to a home on SW 4th Court in Cape Coral at around 7:56 p.m. and found a woman with serious gunshot wounds and a man dead. Officers reportedly performed life-saving measures on the female victim before taking her to the hospital. Police say Joseph Johnson, 87, shot the victim with a handgun before using the weapon on himself. Johnson reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. On Monday morning, police and detectives continued to surround the home for further investigation. The home was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape and several Cape Coral police units surrounded the area. Around midnight, NBC2 arrived at the scene and arrested several police officers, detectives and even a Cape Coral medical examiner inside the home. NBC2 spoke to a neighbor who said he heard gunshots Sunday night and thought they were just fireworks. Neighbors also say they saw the injured woman covered in blood. A suicide note Johnson left behind reportedly said he and the victim were ending their lives together. Police say the victim is still in the hospital with serious injuries. A man is dead and a woman seriously injured after a murder-suicide attempt on Sunday in Cape Coral.

Cape Coral Police responded to a home on SW 4th Court in Cape Coral at around 7:56 p.m. and found a woman with serious gunshot wounds and a man dead.

Officers reportedly performed life-saving measures on the female victim before taking her to the hospital.

According to police, 87-year-old Joseph Johnson shot his victim with a handgun and then turned on himself. Johnson reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police and detectives continued to surround the house on Monday morning to conduct further investigations.

The house was cordoned off with yellow police tape and several Cape Coral police units surrounded the area.

Around midnight, NBC2 arrived at the scene and filmed several police officers, detectives and even a Cape Coral coroner in the house.

NBC2 spoke to a neighbor who said he heard gunshots Sunday night and thought it was just fireworks. Neighbors also said they saw the injured woman covered in blood.

According to reports, a suicide note Johnson left behind mentioned that he and the victim were ending their lives together.

According to police, the victim is still in hospital with serious injuries. Police have not yet released the victim’s identity.
