Man arrested in connection with April shooting in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake City police have arrested a man who was allegedly involved in a shooting in April in the Poplar Grove neighborhood, in which two men were injured.

According to court documents, Luis Alfaro, 24, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and faces two second-degree felonies for discharging a firearm, as well as third-degree aggravated assault, obstruction of justice and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police responded to the first incident on April 6, 2024, just after midnight, in the area of 1000 West and 300 South. Upon arrival, police found a man who had been shot in the left arm and right leg and was walking away from the house. Police said the man was “extremely uncooperative” and did not readily give information. However, the victim said he was shot by a man driving a black vehicle.

Police later learned that a man, later identified as Alfaro, had been taken to the University of Utah Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Investigators met Alfaro, who reportedly said he was at a car meet when several people started shooting. University of Utah security told investigators Alfaro drove to the hospital in a black sedan.

According to court documents, in the days following the shooting, investigators received anonymous tips that suggested Alfaro was involved in the shooting in the area police were called to. Investigators also executed a search warrant for Alfaro’s social media accounts and reportedly found messages from Alfaro confirming his involvement. According to police, in those messages, Alfaro admitted that he had been shot and that he ran toward the person who shot him and shot back.

Video surveillance from a nearby school reportedly confirmed the investigator’s investigation. Police say the video shows a man similar in appearance to Alfaro in a physical altercation with another man. Alfaro then allegedly runs back toward the black vehicle before running toward the other man’s driver’s window and “extending his right arm as if he was going to shoot.” The cars then flee the area at a high rate of speed.

The charges are merely allegations. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
