Fatal pedestrian accident on Lemar Road

On the evening of May 23, 2024, a tragic accident occurred on Lemar Road in Peters Township, Franklin County, resulting in the death of a pedestrian. The incident involved a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 9:12 p.m.

The driver, identified as Anthony B. Smith, 55, of Mercersburg, PA, was driving a 2018 General Motors Corporation Sierra in the northbound lane of Lemar Road (State Route 3007) when the accident occurred. According to the Pennsylvania State Police report, Mr. Smith struck pedestrian John W. Stottlemyer, 77, also of Mercersburg, who was traveling in oncoming traffic in the northbound lane of the same road.

Mr. Stottlemyer sustained fatal injuries from the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing any non-traffic safety equipment at the time of the accident. Mr. Smith, who was wearing safety equipment such as a lap and shoulder belt, was not injured.

No other injuries were reported in the incident and no other vehicles were involved. Police have documented the accident and the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed to date.

Pennsylvania State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident or may have additional information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
