Vacant building in Omaha cordoned off for intruders after investigation by 6 News

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – The suspected squatters who broke into the vacant combined commercial and residential building will no longer find shelter here.

Workers from the company that owns the building sealed it on all sides, and not just with plywood. But before they were finished, a homeless woman had to leave the building. The workers were surprised to find that she lived on the top floor.

She collected her things – and she had collected a lot.

“I gave her time to pack up all her things and stuff, so we can at least get her outside,” the foreman said. “I don’t know where she’s going to go from here.”

The neighbors thanked the foreman for sealing the building for their own safety, but also for the benefit of the homeless people who lived in the vacant building.

“I just don’t want someone living there and it catching fire,” said neighbor Joy Doll. “This house burned down. We don’t want that to happen and someone to get trapped inside.”

Neighbors and property owners hope the homeless woman is the last squatter in the building. Even though the building is better sealed than ever, neighbors have no doubt that squatters will return and try to break in.

The homeless people who have made the vacant building their temporary home must find shelter elsewhere.

“We don’t want to give them a safe place to go, but this is not safe and we care about the community,” Joy said.

When homeless people left the passage, they only had to look down to find a flyer with various offers of help for the homeless and a telephone number.

A partner in the company that owns the building says he has signed the sale documents. He is now waiting for the buyer to close the deal. In the meantime, measures have been put in place to protect the property.
