Electric scooter driver struck and killed by SUV on Route 1

A 22-year-old man riding an electric scooter was struck and killed by an SUV early Wednesday as he tried to cross Route 1 in Edison against a traffic light, authorities said.

According to Edison Police Deputy Chief Robert Dudash, the man was struck at 1:46 a.m. in the southbound center lane at the intersection of Plainfield Avenue.

The Edison resident died of his injuries at a local hospital. His identity will be revealed once family notifications are complete, police said.

The driver, a 61-year-old man from Rahway, had a green light. He is not suspected of any wrongdoing, Dudash said.

Route 1 was closed in the area for approximately three hours due to the ongoing investigation.
