Suspect dead after shooting of 3 Atlanta police officers, APD confirms

A suspect is dead and three police officers are hospitalized after being shot Saturday afternoon.

Atlanta Police Department Chief Darren Schierbaum said officers were called to Fairbanks Street in reference to an armed man at 5:15 p.m.

Officers found him on Desoto Avenue SW, armed with a gun and a knife. There was a fight and shots were fired.

After the shots were fired, other officers took the injured officers to Grady Memorial Hospital.

One police officer was shot in the arm, another in the leg and the third suffered a graze wound. All three are expected to be fine. One is currently in surgery, another is being prepared for surgery, and the third will hopefully not need surgery.

The officers were not identified, but Chief Schierbaum said two of them were 31 years old and had been with the department for four years. The other is 28 years old and has been working at the ministry for five months.

The suspect, who has also not been identified, died at the scene from his injuries.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens released a statement showing his gratitude to the staff at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“I am devastated to find ourselves in this place again where senseless gun violence has injured three of our APD officers. My thoughts are with these officers and their families, and we are cooperating fully with this ongoing investigation. Thank you to the surgeons and staff at Grady Hospital for ensuring our officers survived,” he wrote.
