Iowa lawmaker dies after bridge collapses

Tragedy in the Peruvian town of Madison County. On Thursday morning, off-duty Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholas Koeppe attempted to drive an excavator over a bridge on private property. The bridge collapsed, causing Koeppe and the excavator to fall into the pond below. Authorities say the owner and Koeppe were close to each other. “He is very shaken. It’s a difficult time for him right now. “It sounds like they were very good friends and had been for a long time,” Allen said. Using CPR, they were able to restore Koeppe’s heartbeat. He was flown to a hospital in Des Moines, where he died. Koeppe had been an Adams County sheriff’s deputy for about 18 months. Adams County Sheriff Alan Johannes describes Koeppe as fair. He gave his best, did everything that was asked of him and was a great person, Johannes said. Koeppe is survived by his parents and children.
