Myon Burrell was arrested and charged with drug possession after being released from his 18-year sentence in 2020

MINNEAPOLIS – Myon Demarlo Burrell, 38, was arrested Thursday and formally charged Friday, May 10, with one count of fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance in Hennepin County.

Burrell was released from prison in 2020 after serving 18 years for the 2002 murder of Tyesha Edwards. Since his release in 2020, Burrell has been no stranger to the justice system and is currently charged with a 2023 arrest in which he was charged with fifth-degree drugs and possession of a firearm by a person ineligible to vote.

According to the criminal complaint, officers obtained a search warrant for Burrell and were seen driving the white Chevy Tahoe Burrell was driving and the house where he was staying. Based on an investigation involving the Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force, officers conducted a traffic stop on Burrell’s white Chevy Tahoe, in which he was the driver and sole occupant. The “defendant refused to roll down the window when officers initially approached and took a long time to open the door.”

The criminal complaint states: “The officers were unable to see what was happening in the vehicle due to the “dark tint” of the windows. Officers discovered pieces of a controlled substance on the “floor on the passenger side of the vehicle” as well as a pill that tested positive for methamphetamine. During a search of the home where Burrell currently resides, officers discovered “a suitcase containing $60,000 in cash” and a “business card with the defendant’s name on it.”
