Two hikers found dead on Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the Lower 48

Officials found two hikers dead after they went missing while climbing Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the Lower 48 states.

The pair were reported missing Tuesday evening by a third hiker after the two did not return to their camp for several hours, the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook.

The person told police that the two hikers planned to descend to the “Notch,” a flat cliff on the west side of the mountain face. They then skied or snowboarded back to Upper Boy Scout Lake, where they had set up camp.

Inyo County Search and Rescue officials used a helicopter and foot troops to search the area, but the two were found dead. It was not immediately clear when the hikers were discovered.

According to Inyo County deputies, the case is being handled by the Tulare County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, which has jurisdiction over the area.

At more than 14,500 feet high, Mount Whitney is the 11th highest peak in the country. It lies on the border between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Inyo National Forest, about 100 miles east of Fresno, California. According to the National Park Service, the shortest hiking route from the base of the mountain to the summit is 10.7 miles.
