SEDGWICK COUNTY – A Kansas woman has been sentenced to prison for a car crash that killed her 4-year-old daughter last year.

On Thursday, Judge David Kaufman sentenced Britne Costello, 33, of Douglass, to six years in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. On June 20, Costello pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault.

In February 2023, a vehicle driven by Costello with children in the vehicle was traveling westbound in the 20,000 block of MacArthur in Sedgwick County, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Nathan Gibbs.

A Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy and several citizens pulled Costello and the two children from the burning vehicle. Emergency medical services took Costello, a 4-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy to a local hospital, where the girl later died, Gibbs said.
