Swimming instructor at a leisure center arrested for sex crimes against children

According to investigators, the child, who was under 13 at the time, was sexually abused more than once.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – A Virginia man is facing charges that he sexually abused a child while giving them swim lessons at a Woodbridge recreation center last year. Investigators say the child was abused on multiple occasions.

On June 22, officials began investigating assaults that reportedly occurred between April and May 2022 at the Chinn Park Recreation Center on Chinn Park Drive.

Investigators say the victim, identified at the time only as a child under the age of 13, was sexually abused on more than one occasion by a swim instructor at the recreation center. After an investigation, the swim instructor was identified as 72-year-old Daniel Smith. He was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault. He is currently being held without bail for his alleged involvement in the crimes.

Police have not yet announced whether they expect additional victims or whether they are looking for anyone else who may have been injured by Smith. The investigation into these attacks is ongoing.
