Solid Waste Management Announces 2nd Annual Truck Art Winners

HOUSTON (CW39) – The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD), in partnership with the Houston Independent School District (HISD), is excited to announce the first place winners of the 2nd annual competition “Reimagine: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” truck art. Winners of this year’s art competition will have their original works displayed on SWMD collection trucks, creatively showcasing the talent of Houston students and raising awareness to recycling in the Houston area Students and their families will be recognized at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 7 to recognize their accomplishments.

2nd Annual Truck Art Contest Winners:


  • Jose Najera – Pin Oak Middle School – Special Education
  • Baraka Farooq – TH Rogers School – 3rd year
  • Yin Ho Jalen Wan – Mandarin immersion magnet school – 8th grade
  • Cynthia Zhou – Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions – Grade 11

SWMD would like to thank HISD students for their participation in this year’s competition which received over 100 entries. “These artworks will be regularly displayed in bold on our trucks as they provide service throughout Houston, showcasing the talent of Houston students, while raising awareness of the city’s recycling programs,” said the SWMD Director Mark Wilfalk.
