Mumbai: Man from Nalasopara who raped a woman 22 years ago reveals the crime to a police informant during a drinking session and is arrested

Mumbai, July 15: Mumbai Police on Friday, July 12, arrested a gang rape accused who had been living under a false identity for 22 years after he was arrested for a drinking session with a police informer. The accused, a resident of Nalasopara, was reportedly evading arrest for over 20 years. The incident came to light when the gang rape accused told the police informer about the case last month.

After his arrest, the accused confessed to his crime. According to a report in the Hindustan NewspaperThe incident occurred in 2002 when a 24-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped and raped by four men. After the incident, the victim approached the police and filed a complaint. At that time, the police arrested two of the four accused three days after the victim gave the description of the accused. However, the other two accused were at large and declared themselves absconding. The arrested accused were remanded in judicial custody. One of the absconding accused, named Michael, had reportedly changed his name to Vinod Kumar Pandey.

Police officials said Michael earned his living by driving an autorickshaw. Talking about the discovery of the accused, cops said Michael had disclosed his crime to an informant while drunk. After that, the informant alerted the police who were on guard at Nalasopara to nab the accused. On July 12, Michael, alias Vinod Kumar Pandey, was spotted near Nalasopara railway station trying to pick up passengers. The police intercepted Michale and arrested him. During interrogation, the accused confessed to being involved in the gang rape. Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt to catch the fourth accused in connection with the 2002 gang rape.
