Two drivers die in four-vehicle fiery crash at Central Pennsylvania intersection

DANVILLE – Two people were killed in a serious four-vehicle crash in Montour County Friday afternoon.

The names and gender of the dead have not yet been released. County Coroner Scott Lynn said autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday.

State police released the following information Sunday about the accident, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Route 54 at County Line Road near Danville:

The driver of a dump truck loaded with rocks, traveling westbound on Route 54, was traveling at excessive speed and turned left to avoid rear-ending a sedan.

The dump truck collided head-on with an eastbound truck that included a flatbed trailer loaded with cement pipe material. The two trucks then collided with a small dump truck with a T-trailer that was stopped on County Line Road.

The sedan, which the driver of the dump truck loaded with rocks had tried to avoid, collided head-on with the flatbed truck, which had veered into the westbound lane of Route 54.

The impact caused the sedan to be thrown backwards across the intersection into a ditch.

The three trucks caught fire. Fuel spilled into the ditch and the sedan also caught fire.

Both drivers of the truck were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sedan was freed and taken to Geisinger Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver of the smaller truck was able to get to safety under his own power. It is not clear from the statement whether he was injured.

The names of the surviving drivers were also not published.

Eight fire departments, along with a hazardous materials task force and the environmental protection agency, were dispatched to the scene of the fire.
