Man dies after three-vehicle crash in northern Idaho

NAPLES, Idaho – Idaho State Police are investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday evening near Naples, Idaho.

The accident occurred on US Highway 95 near mile marker 497. A commercial vehicle driven by a 24-year-old man from Surrey, Canada, was a red 2023 Freightliner with a refrigerated trailer and was traveling north on US Highway 95.

The driver of the semi-trailer lost control after suddenly braking to avoid stationary vehicles. The semi-trailer skidded onto the southbound lane and crashed head-on into two cars.

The first collided with a white 2019 Toyota SUV driven by a 73-year-old man and a 71-year-old passenger. Both are residents of Boundary County. The man died of his injuries at the scene of the accident, and the passenger was flown by rescue helicopter to Kootenai Medical in Coeur d’Alene.

The truck also struck a white 2011 Kia Sorento driven by a 33-year-old man from Athol, Idaho. The man suffered minor injuries and was recovered at the scene; the professional driver was uninjured.

Everyone involved was wearing seat belts.

The motorway was completely closed for almost 5 hours. The next of kin were notified.

The accident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
