State authorities announce passage of law honoring police dogs killed in the line of duty

A law named in honor of a police dog killed in the line of duty has come into force.

“Broko’s Law” honors the Stonington K-9 who was killed in December while protecting his handler.

Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz was present Thursday along with several police officers to announce the passage of the law.

Governor Lamont signed the bill last month.

Under Broko’s Law, when a police dog is killed in the line of duty, the money goes to the law enforcement agency and not to the court.

According to Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz, the cost of purchasing, training and maintaining a police dog is between $20,000 and $40,000.
