Balloon launch in memory of Newark teenager found dead in Erie Canal

NEWARK, NY (WROC) — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Newark Police Department investigated a suspected drowning in the Erie Canal in the Village of Newark on Monday, June 24.
According to police, a witness reported seeing a man climb into the water from the top of a railing around 8 p.m.

The witness then attempted to rescue the teenager but was unable to find him. An hour later, rescue workers found the teenager in the water. He was pronounced dead.

Today, classmates and others who knew him gathered to remember him.

“He always tried to be there for me and encourage me to do things. For example, if I did something bad, he would tell me not to do it and definitely try to put me in a better mood,” said Lillian Mumford.

“He was a happy child. You didn’t really know what was wrong with him. He always had a smile on his face,” said Naomi Jones.

Wilson Augustave’s family was there and expressed their appreciation to the community that showed their support.

“It’s really bad. It’s too sad that he didn’t recognize and acknowledge all the people who cared about him. He was loved like we loved him. The community loved him. As far as I can see, you can see the love out here,” Wilson Augustave Sr. said.

Susan Hasenauer, superintendent of the Newark Central School District, released a statement saying:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our students. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of our student. We ask that you keep our school community in your thoughts and prayers. Our school will be open tomorrow during regular hours. Counselors are available to any students, staff and community members who need support.”
