‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor Tamayo Perry, 49, killed in fatal shark attack | Hollywood

The surfing world is in mourning as news of the death of “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, lifeguard and surf instructor Tamayo Perry hit Hawaii. The 49-year-old actor, who also starred in “Blue Crush” and “Charlie’s Angels,” was fatally attacked by a shark near Goat Island on Sunday afternoon, Honolulu Emergency Services said.

The well-known surfer reportedly went surfing off Mokuauia near Laie, Hawaii. Sources confirmed he was later found dead at 1 p.m. A caller reported the incident claiming to have seen a man suffering from apparent shark bites off Malaekahana Beach near Kahuku. Perry’s body appeared to have been ravaged by more than one shark bite.

Shortly before 1pm, rescue workers arrived at Malaekahana Beach. Rescue workers came to the aid of the Ocean Safety lifeguard and brought him to shore by jet ski while paramedics assisted in determining death. Perry reportedly died at the scene.

Following the death of the star of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” officials from the Department of Water Resources issued warnings about sharks in the region.

Honolulu officials and local community remember Tamayo Perry following announcement of his death

According to Hawaii News Now, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi identified with the legendary surfer and called his death a “tragic loss”: “Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected.”

The Encyclopedia of Surfing describes Perry as a “tenacious, God-fearing pipeline specialist from Oahu’s North Shore,” while Surfing magazine calls him the “most likely winner of Barrel of the Year” in 2022. Born in 1975, the much-celebrated surfer started surfing at age 12. In July 2016, he began working for the Ocean Safety Department, said Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

Kurt Lage, Honolulu’s acting chief of marine safety, said he was a “lifeguard loved by everyone… He is very well known on the North Shore. He is a world-renowned professional surfer.”

The local Hawaiian community also flocked to Hawaii News Now’s latest post dedicated to Perry. One wrote, “Rest in peace Tamayo. Never forget when you tried to teach me to drive. 12 years old. Hauula mall parking lot. Pas passenger. Everyone laughing!! Time flies. Love to your ohana!”

Another Instagram user wrote: “You will be missed – pure aloha. Condolences and love to Emilia, the Perry Ohana, the Lifeguard Ohana and all of our North Shore family and friends. This is hard on us. 😢” A third wrote: “My heart is broken. The North Shore has lost a true legend and a good man. My heart goes out to Emilia and his family 💕💕💕💕”

Moana Jones Wong, another professional surfer from Hawaii who is affectionately known as the “Queen of Pipeline,” commented, “I love you forever ♾️❤️ and will miss you forever.”

While many others expressed their deepest condolences to Perry’s family, another user shared a recent meeting with the late lifeguard and his wife: “My condolences 🤍 Just met him and his wife yesterday, crazy to see this now. Brief interaction but such a loving and warm couple.”
