Grandfather of boy hit by school bus in Mamaroneck is ‘stunned’ after fatal accident

Mamaroneck, New York – A Westchester County community is mourning the loss of a mother and her child who were killed on their way to school Thursday.

Molly Donovan, 43, and 6-year-old Michael Donovan Volpe were struck and killed by a school bus while crossing Mamaroneck Avenue on Thursday morning.

CBS New York’s Tony Aiello spoke to the little boy’s heartbroken grandfather.

Thomas Volpe Sr., who lives on Long Island, says his 6-year-old grandson, Michael Donovan Volpe, loved anything that had wheels.

Toy cars were among the candles and flowers left at a memorial at the scene of the accident on Friday.

“He was the purest love I’ve ever known. He was a blessing,” Volpe said.

According to police, Donovan and her son were on the crosswalk at the time of the accident and had the right of way, but were overlooked by a bus driver turning left.

“How can this be? How can this be? He’s a bus driver,” Volpe said.

“Are you trying to understand?” asked Aiello.

“No, I’m not trying to understand it. I just can’t believe it… There were other people in the crosswalk. How could you not see them?” Volpe said.

Police say charges are unlikely after fatal accident in Mamaroneck

There were students on the bus at the time of the accident. However, no one on the bus was injured.

Police say the bus driver – a 68-year-old man – has been cooperating with investigators. The investigation is ongoing, but charges are unlikely.

The accident occurred less than two blocks from Michael’s school, Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School, which offers grief counseling for students and staff.

The village says a crossing guard will be stationed at the intersection on the remaining school days and that measures to improve safety are being considered.
