The Westbrook school board suspends baseball players and fires the varsity coach

The Westbrook school board has suspended some players from the high school baseball team and removed first-year coach John McCarthy from the program as it investigates a possible code of conduct violation.

Westbrook athletic director Beth Murphy did not provide any details Wednesday about the school’s investigation, saying only that McCarthy “has been removed at this time.”

Murphy did not say how many players were suspended.

McCarthy did not coach the team in Tuesday’s 13-1 loss to Biddeford. Biddeford coach Keith Leblanc said Westbrook assistant coach Matt Findlay led the Blue Blazes (0-9) on Tuesday. Westbrook still has seven games left.

Westbrook Superintendent Peter Lancia declined to give the reason for the coaching change.

“I can say there has been a change in our coaching,” he said. “When it comes to a personnel situation, I can’t go into many details.”

Lancia said Murphy and Patrick Colgan, one of Westbrook High’s three co-principals, are “leading an ongoing investigation that is ongoing.”

Lancia added that he did not know when the alleged code of conduct incident occurred.

“It’s all part of the investigation,” he said.

Westbrook Police Chief Sean Lally said in an email that his department is not investigating McCarthy and that information received indicates the “alleged incident did not occur in the city of Westbrook.”

When asked if he knew where the incident occurred, Lally said he had no further information to share.

Westbrook High has a Co-Curricular Code of Expectations for behavior, attendance and academic progress. The document, posted on the school’s website, also includes the school’s substance abuse policy, which details prohibited acts and the consequences of first, second and third violations.
