Jackson City Employees Fired After Fraud Investigation

JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT) – Jackson Mayor Chowke Antar Lumumba announced that a human resources employee has been fired following an investigation into misuse of city funds.

On Monday, the mayor said the irregularities were discovered by human resources director Toya Martin and occurred in the benefits department.

“Jackson police were immediately notified and further investigations were initiated. While working with police, we discovered additional irregularities and notified the Attorney General and State Auditor,” he said.

Lumumba said the funds should actually be used to pay health insurance contributions, especially for pensioners.

The mayor would not say which employee was allegedly involved or how much was stolen; he said only that it was a “criminal amount” and an “alarming amount.”

He said criminal charges are likely. Lumumba urges any employees who notice irregularities in their insurance payments to contact Human Resources at (601) 960-1053.

It is unclear how many people are affected.

This is an evolving story.
