Hamburg police shoot man with firebomb near European Championship fan parade

According to a police post on the social media platform X, German police shot a man on Sunday on the sidelines of a fan parade for the 2024 European Football Championship in downtown Hamburg who had threatened officers with a pickaxe and a firebomb.

A large police operation is currently underway and the attacker is receiving medical treatment for his injuries, the post continued.

The incident occurred in the St. Pauli district as Poland and the Netherlands were preparing to play against each other at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion at 3 p.m. (13:00 GMT).

Fan marches are planned ahead of the matches and a parade of Dutch fans took place at around the time of the incident at 12:30pm (10:30 GMT).

Germany is hosting the month-long tournament, which began on Friday evening.
