Londoner arrested for online support of Hamas

A west London man was arrested on Wednesday for showing support for Hamas, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Counter Terrorism Police were alerted last Tuesday that the 43-year-old man had expressed his support for the banned terrorist organisation. The man was released from custody and bailed pending a court hearing in September for breaching the Terrorism Act 2000.

“Since the horrific attacks in Israel last October and the conflict that followed, the amount of extremist and terrorist material reported to us by the public has increased significantly,” said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command. “Every report is reviewed by specialist officers and anything deemed to be a potential terrorist offence here in the UK is referred for further investigation. If, through this investigation, we find evidence of a crime being committed, we will seek to identify, arrest and bring to justice the person responsible.”
