Will wide receiver be the Houston Texans’ deepest position group in 2024?

Much has been made of the Houston Texans’ wide receiving unit, particularly their big three. Nico Collins and Tank Dell established themselves as top targets in the passing attack, racking up a combined 2,006 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

Following their success in 2023, the Texans acquired All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills. Diggs is coming off his sixth career 1,000-yard rushing year. The Texans might have the league’s best offense in 2024. However, their expanded unit’s contribution will go beyond the production of Collins, Dell and Diggs.

In the latest episode of Locked On Texans, Coty M. Davis and John Hickman discuss whether or not the wide receiving unit has become the Texans’ deepest position group heading into next season.

“Out of the other receivers we’re not talking about, let’s talk about a guy who has improved a lot throughout OTAs and minicamp,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “All these guys we don’t talk about, everyone wants to hear about the best.”

Several receivers made a name for themselves during OTAs and mandatory minicamps. One of the Texans’ most impressive playmakers came thanks to the production of John Metchie III.

In team scrimmages, Metchie displayed the speed and skill that made him one of the top receivers entering the 2022 NFL Draft. He recorded a handful of catches while creating separation between himself and defenders – including one against Derek Stingley Jr.

“Metchie came in – he looks more explosive this second time,” Ryans said. “Jared Wayne is healthy and has been able to show himself: a big catch radius, a long guy who can run, a physical game.

“Hutch, Hutch is flying at full speed every play. I’m happy with what Hutch is doing as well. He’s improving his route running and his ability to attack the edges and get open. Our depth, we have a lot of guys. who are working and gaining valuable experience by getting the reps they received.
