14-year-old schoolgirl beaten and raped: PH driver arrested | Local news

A Roxborough man has been arrested and remains in police custody after raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Tobago on Monday.

The student flagged down a PH taxi driver to take him to school, police said.

But the driver made a detour to another location where the student was beaten and raped, the girl told police.

She was later dropped off on the street near her school.

Her relatives were contacted and she was taken to Scarborough General Hospital where she received medical treatment.

The driver from Roxborough was later arrested by police.

Asked for comment yesterday, Bradon Roberts, TTUTA official in Tobago, said: “It would be something that would be quite traumatic for the child. Such things would not be isolated cases. Such things would not get rid of the child, his relatives and other school children who also want to go to school. These things would have far-reaching effects on our society.”

Education Minister Zorisha Hackett said she was devastated and horrified to hear of the attack on the student.

“My heart aches for the student and her family at this unimaginable time. We will immediately launch an investigation to uncover the details and ensure she receives all the support and care she needs. This tragedy painfully underscores the urgent need for stronger safety measures across the country,” Hackett said.
