Buffalo Soldiers Reenact Civil War History in Jackson

A piece of Civil War history came to life in the heart of Jackson. Reenactors with Buffalo Soldiers Florida Incorporated are touring across Mississippi and stopped at the Old Capitol Museum Tuesday morning to bring the 3rd U.S. Colored Cavalry back to life. This was a group of soldiers trained at Vicksburg made up of former slaves and freedmen. Jacksonians had the opportunity to learn about the role black soldiers played fighting for the Union in the Civil War and see up close the conditions in which they lived. “This is a history that we are talking about today that is not taught in schools,” said Richard Wilder, president of Buffalo Soldiers Florida. “It’s like there’s a hidden gem (and) it’s up to us to share it, discover it and be able to pass it on.” The Reenactors said their hope is to share their knowledge with children and inspire them to take on the role. , ensuring that the history of black Union soldiers and their sacrifices are preserved for generations to come.
