Kyle Busch talks about the incident with Ross Chastain on the last lap

Kyle Busch is speaking out about his incident with Ross Chastain during the final lap of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma. Speaking to Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass, Busch said his day was “ruined” because Chastain knocked him out of a possible top-five finish.

“A few guys had better tires than us at the end of the race, but we would have had a good day,” Busch said. “Unfortunately, one of those guys ran into us on the last lap and ruined our day. It’s frustrating not to get the result we deserved.”

This was one of the few difficult moments for Busch this year. He has yet to win a race, which is different from last year, as he won three races by this point in 2023. Despite Sunday’s incident, Busch earned a P12 finish, his best performance since his eighth-place finish in the Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway in early May.

Last week, Busch was involved in a crash with Kyle Larson and did not finish the race. Speaking to reporters before the Sonoma race, Larson said he had not spoken to Busch about the incident.

“No, I haven’t talked to him. I haven’t talked to him. But I don’t hold any grudges against him, I don’t know if he’s still mad at me or whatever,” Larson said. “I think I always look back very well on accidents that I’ve been involved in and whether I caused them or not. I still try to figure out what mistake I made. Yeah, I look at it, if I hadn’t just lightly touched his side panel to get a crosswind, he wouldn’t have gotten excited and started driving into me on the straightaway and then mobbing me in (turn) one.

“I didn’t want to race him and have a dick-measuring contest. I just wanted to get into the turn. So, yeah, if I hadn’t touched his quarter, we would have been fine through the turn. I look at it more as my fault, but in the turn, I know I was the one who spun, but I don’t think that was my fault at all. It’s just racing and he was frustrated and I don’t know, I’m sure he’s not too frustrated with me right now.”
