Toyota and Mazda stop production of five models

Two of five Japanese car manufacturers that uncovered misconduct in an internal investigation ordered by the government must stop production of the affected models starting Thursday.

On Monday, Toyota, Mazda, Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki were found to have falsified performance tests to obtain government certifications for their vehicles.

Toyota and Mazda will stop production of a total of five models following an order from the Ministry of Transport to stop deliveries of these models.

Toyota will stop production of its Yaris Cross and two other models at its plants in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures until June 28.

Mazda will stop production of its Mazda2 and one other vehicle at plants in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures.

There are growing concerns about the impact of the shutdown on the local economy and business partners.

The production volume of the models being discontinued totaled 130,000 units for Toyota and 15,000 units for Mazda in the 2023 fiscal year.
