Udupi fugitive doctor suspended after female doctor alleges sexual harassment | Bangalore News

The Karnataka Health Department on Tuesday suspended Dr Roberto Rebello, the medical officer of Kundapur Taluk Public Hospital in Udupi district, on charges of sexual harassment.

D Randeep, Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare Services, issued a suspension order against Rebello pending the completion of investigations after an FIR was filed against him. The move came after a doctor at the hospital filed a complaint with the police alleging workplace harassment.

Kundapura police station has charged Rebello under sections 354 of the Penal Code (assault or use of criminal force against women), 354A (physical contact and advances with unwanted and explicit sexual advances), 504 (insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insult to modesty of women).

According to the woman’s complaint, Rebello called her late at night after work and sent her messages, asking if she was happy with her husband and if her husband was checking her phone.

The woman also claimed that Rebello sexually and psychologically abused her by asking her to wear jeans and T-shirts during night shifts and after duty hours at the hospital and making vulgar comments about her appearance. He also allegedly called her for lunch and dinner during duty hours, the woman claimed.

Festive offer

The plaintiff also claimed that Rebello sent photos of him with other women in expensive hotels abroad, of his proximity to politicians there and others. He also allegedly promised to take the plaintiff with him one day. When the woman refused to comply with his requests, he allegedly insulted her and threatened to fire her from her job.

In addition, Rebello was accused of misconduct toward patients, harassing other colleagues, and denying dialysis services to poor patients.

An investigation will also be launched based on the report of the District Family Welfare Officer, which highlights several management lapses, including mismanagement of sewage, unused dialysis machines and refusal to provide dialysis to poor patients.

The Health Department has currently appointed an ENT doctor from Mudigere Government Hospital as a replacement for Rebello. The accused is currently on the run and is reportedly seeking provisional bail.
