Dustin Poirier and nine other people suspended indefinitely after UFC 302

The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) recently released its list of medical suspensions and injuries for the fighters who competed on the UFC 302 roster earlier this month (Saturday, June 1, 2024) at the Prudential Center in Newark. According to MMA Junkie, several athletes have been given suspensions of various kinds.

That includes lightweight headliner Dustin Poirier, who will be out indefinitely due to a broken nose sustained in his loss to Islam Makhachev. In addition, UFC 302 co-headliners Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa have both been benched until further notice, which may be surprising given their mediocre fight.

Below are the full medical suspensions for UFC 302:

Ailin Perez: Suspended indefinitely until the oral surgeon has completed the jaw correction and 30 days of no contact.
Trending titles Butter: Suspended indefinitely until the doctor releases the x-ray of the right thumb.
Bassil Hafez: 30 days suspension, no contact.
Mickey Gall: Suspended indefinitely pending nephrological clearance; also suspended for 14 days.
Grant Dawson: 30 days no contact due to injury to the left eyebrow.
Jailton Almeida: Suspended indefinitely until left knee is cleared by orthopedist.
Randy Brown: Suspended indefinitely until the orthopedic surgeon gives final clearance.
Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos: Suspended indefinitely pending ophthalmological examination.
Michal Oleksiejczuk: Suspended indefinitely until right elbow is cleared by orthopedist.
Sean Strickland: Suspended indefinitely until orthopedic clearance for left tibia/leg.
Paul Costa: Suspended indefinitely until right ankle/foot is cleared by orthopedic surgeon; also suspended 30 days with no contact for 14 days.
Islam Makhachev: 30 days probation for facial injuries.
Dustin Poirier: Suspended indefinitely until nose is cleared by ENT doctor; also suspended indefinitely until left knee is cleared by orthopedic surgeon.

Just to remind you, fighters often return to action much more quickly once doctors give them the green light. The long suspensions are, in most cases, just a precautionary measure. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight exam and often only come to light during follow-up exams.
