Search in Port Lavaca: Coast Guard calls off search for teenage man and son last seen crabbing off Magnolia Beach

Port Lavaca, Texas (KTRK) – The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a man and his teenage son whose arrival near Port Lavaca was reported overdue on Saturday.

According to the USCG, the search was called off around 7:55 a.m. on Sunday.

On Saturday at around 11:20 a.m., emergency services received a call that father and son were overdue.

The couple reportedly left Magnolia Beach at 5am on a crab boat named My Possum to catch crabs and were scheduled to return at around 10:30am.

Guard officials issued an urgent maritime information broadcast and ordered the deployment of a helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Station in Corpus Christi and a 29-foot response boat from the Coast Guard Station in Port O’Connor.

A Calhoun County fireboat crew arrived on the scene and reported a capsized vessel matching the description “My Possum” in the Matagorda Ship Channel off Magnolia Beach.

“After considering all relevant factors, we have unfortunately made the difficult decision to end our search today,” said Homar Barrera, Corpus Christi Sector Search and Rescue Coordinator.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Coast Guard had previously been informed that the missing man was 35 years old. The missing man is 50 years old.
