Review: Mariah the Scientist at the House of Blues in Houston

On the first day of May, Mariah Buckles was arrested for battery after an incident at an Atlanta nightclub in March, during which she allegedly ripped off another woman’s wig. On Monday night, the singer, better known as Mariah the Scientist, filled the House of Blues for her. Living Dining Tour.

“I see you Houston!” You have a lot of bad guys here,” Mariah the scientist exclaimed as she reached out to the crowd and grabbed a red cowboy hat. She quickly donned a fan’s gift, causing the room to erupt in cheers for the Atlanta singer.

THE Living Dining Tour kicked off in Honolulu in February in support of the singer’s third studio album. Buckles’ stage name comes from her pre-stardom journey as a student at St. John’s University in New York on a biology scholarship, but her desire to be a star inspired her to abandon his studies. The move proved to be a success as his debut on Sound Cloud garnered him enough attention to eventually lead to a recording contract. Trading beakers for beats, the singer maintains a real connection with her audience as displayed on Monday evening.

His stage show uses powerful lights and two large screens that broadcast pop culture images against the backdrop of the music. Songs like “Note to Self”, “Out of Luck” and “Lovesick” are accompanied by film images and cut scenes like the battle between O-Ren Ishii and The Bride from Kill Bill. If they’re not movie scenes, they’re images that match the tone of the music, like Mariah running in the snow.

This works well with quite a few songs, like when molten lava smolders behind Mariah while the strains of “Revenge” fill the room. The singer carries the show but is really at her best when the crowd joins her, which happens often. Mariah encourages the audience to sing along, especially on hit songs like “Spread Thin” and “Stone Cold.” The latter, his dark serenade popularized by TikTok, received one of the biggest responses of the evening as fans sang the chorus at the top of their lungs.

There are similar reactions to Tee Grizzley’s hit “IDGAF” and the 21 Savage-assisted “Dark Days,” but the strongest response of the night occurs when no music is playing. As Mariah stood in front of a dark screen and the room went silent, red letters reading “FREE THUG” flashed behind her. She chanted in unison in support of her boyfriend, rapper Young Thug, who is currently facing legal battles.
