One driver killed, another hospitalized after crash on South Carolina road, cops say

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one driver was killed and another was injured in a head-on collision on Wednesday.

The collision between the two vehicles occurred around 1:50 p.m. in Union County, Master Trooper Gary Miller said Thursday.

According to Miller, a 2011 Honda sedan was traveling north on Jerusalem Road and collided with a southbound 2015 Chevrolet sedan near the intersection with Countryside Drive.

The Chevy driver died, Miller said.

The identity of the Chevy driver has not been publicly released by the Union County Coroner’s Office.

The Honda driver was injured and taken to a nearby hospital, Miller said. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

Miller said the drivers were the only people in their respective cars and no other injuries were reported.

There was no discussion about whether either driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information on the cause of the collision is not available, but the accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 357 people have died on South Carolina roads through May 22, 2024. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, according to DPS.

According to DPS data, at least seven people died in crashes in Union County in 2024. Six deaths were reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
