Eau Claire man charged in police-involved shooting

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A man is now facing charges in connection with a police officer-involved shooting incident in Eau Claire Friday night (5/24/24). Thomas Burback, 53, of Eau Claire, is charged with failure to comply with an officer’s arrest attempt, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and disorderly conduct. He was set on $5,000 bail this morning in Eau Claire District Court.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to an incident on 2nd Street on Friday when they heard Burback screaming from a neighboring home. An officer walked over and noticed children hiding on a platform with Burback. The children told the officer there was a fight going on. The officer shined his flashlight on Burback. He pointed a gun at them and fired one shot. According to the complaint, Burback then went into the home and refused to leave. A gas was used in the home and he was eventually taken into custody. A hearing is scheduled for July 11.th.
