Ajayi Crowther, hostel porter, suspended and assists investigation

Following the tragic death of a student of Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State, the university’s spokesperson, Femi Atoyebi, has disclosed that the hostel porter (name withheld) is assisting the police with investigations.

The student in question, whose identity was not confirmed by the institution’s spokesperson, was beaten to death by a group of other students for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from the Shepherd Inn Hostel on the school premises.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday, Atoyebi mentioned that some of the students had been arrested and handed over to the police, while pointing out that the total number of attackers was unknown.

He said: “I think we have some at the moment and they have been handed over to the police.”

When asked if the deceased was Alex Timileyi, a prince of the Warri Kingdom in Delta State, Atoyebi said he could not confirm.

“The school must have known the student by now. It is not a secret. I do not know his status as a prince. But as far as I know, he was a student at Ajayi Crowther University,” he said.

Regarding the hostel’s porter, Atoyebi said: “He has been suspended for dereliction of duty and handed over to the police to assist in the investigation.”

According to a source at the school who spoke to PUNCH Online on Saturday and wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter, the deceased was beaten from 6pm on Friday to about 10am on Saturday.

“They said they caught him with a stolen phone. They started beating him from 6pm yesterday (Friday) until he died around 10am today (Saturday).”

The incident took place at the Shepherd Inn. It is now like a lodging house or hostel. They also shaved the guy’s hair before beating him,” the source said.
