Man attacked by 3 teenagers and left for dead | Spokane News

Curtiss said the teenagers started taunting him and then things got physical: “I got out of my car and they caught me.”

The youths began to hit him. Curtiss said the first blow was to the head; then they started kicking him. “They hit him so hard it was excruciating.”

He said he suffered a bruised head and a broken nose. The blows knocked out his front teeth and broke his wrist in three places.

“They could have killed me,” Curtiss said.

He added that he is undergoing cancer treatment and is taking blood thinners. Curtiss stressed that the amount of blood he lost could have been life-threatening.

“I could have bled to death.”

Curtiss said nearby good Samaritans saved his life. Patrick O’Halloran saw the altercation, called 911 and even chased two of the teens for several blocks to catch them. He described the incident as “brutal.”

“Their cheering, their jeering and their laughter, and then when he was lying on the ground bleeding, I was really scared. I will never forget the image of him falling face down on the concrete.”

Diane Curtiss, one of Curtiss’ daughters, said she couldn’t remember Spokane ever being this dangerous. She told NonStop Local she was looking for answers and asking the teens she believes were responsible to come forward: “There has to be one of you who cares. One of you who has a heart who can come forward and say something so justice can take its course.”

Curtiss said he is grateful to be alive and able to tell his story and hopes this never happens to anyone else: “I’ve lived this long. There’s a reason I’m here.”

NonStop Local has reached out to Spokane Police, who said they arrived at the scene and that their Major Crimes Unit is investigating. No arrests have been made in connection with this incident. If you have any information, call Crime Check.
